When to Use These Steps
If you regularly connect to specific applications on the F&M network through off-campus locations, then a Virtual Private Network (VPN) will ensure you connect securely by encrypting your personal data. This is particularly helpful for students and faculty who travel abroad as well as professional staff who frequently log on at home. (Is it advisable for off-campus/commuting students? retirees?) To set up a VPN, you will need to install GlobalProtect as described in this Knowledge Article. Students who wish to access the network via GlobalProtect must have a valid academic reason, and a faculty or staff member must enter a Service Request for the student.
Notes:
- These applications require a VPN connection when accessed off-campus: Webwork, r studio, Cognos Reporting, and Banner Administrative Pages.
- A VPN creates a more secure connection to the internet.
Overview
GlobalProtect creates a portal to connect your device to the F&M campus through a VPN "tunnel" so you can securely access applications and the internet. After you install the GlobalProtect software on your computer, you can use it to connect to the VPN and access the F&M network resources you need. When you are finished working, please disconnect/end connection to the VPN.
How To
Install GlobalProtect on your computer
1. Go to remote.fandm.edu
2. If prompted, follow the steps to approve your network log-in.
3. Click to download the appropriate GlobalProtect installer, based on your operating system.
4. Open/run the installer package you downloaded on your computer and follow the on-screen prompts to install.
Use this portal address: remote.fandm.edu
5. Apple users: The GlobalProtect software may ask you to allow the application to run on your computer. If the application doesn't complete the install, and you haven't been prompted to allow the software to run, then go to the security settings on your computer and click Allow:
From the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen: click System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General > Allow
6. If prompted on your phone, click Approve.
7. GlobalProtect is now installed. Note the globe icon in your menubar or system tray.
Use the VPN service
1. Click the globe icon. Portal address will be: remote.fandm.edu

2. Click Connect.
3. Enter your NetId and Password and click Sign In.
4. On your phone, you will be asked to approve log-in; follow the steps to approve.
5. You are connected to GlobalProtect VPN.
Other Important Notes
- When you use VPN, you are connecting your device to a remote server, so the VPN connection will time-out and disconnect after a period of inactivity. When you are finished working, please disconnect/end connection to the VPN.
- If you need to connect to VPN on your iOS or Android device, download and install the GlobalProtect app from your device's app store. You must still use Duo Security to complete the log-in process.
- If you get a NEW mobile phone or phone number, you will need to update your phone information in myDiplomat (if the number changes) and install the Duo app on your phone (if you get a new one). If your phone isn't set up correctly, this could hinder your ability to install and log into the VPN network.
