Operating System Support

Overview

ITS installs, manages, and supports both Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS operating systems for the Franklin & Marshall community. All college-provided computers for employees, classrooms, and labs are deployed with the latest ITS-approved version of their respective OS to ensure security and compatibility.

Before you get started

  • This article applies to Employees, Retired Researching Faculty, and Students.
  • Guidelines specifically apply to college-owned hardware.
  • Refer to the College-Owned Computers - Support Services Technology Guideline for specific management policies.

How to

Follow these steps to understand how ITS manages your computer's operating system and how you can maintain it.

Operating System Installation

  1. ITS performs the initial installation of the operating system on all college-owned devices during the setup process.
  2. If your computer or OS is performing poorly, do not attempt a manual reinstall. Contact the ITS INFO Desk for hardware and software support.

Installing and Using Software Applications

  1. Ensure you are downloading the correct file type for your OS.
    • Windows typically uses .exe or .msi files,
    • MacOS uses .dmg or .pkg files.
  2. Review the license agreement or terms of service for every application before proceeding.
  3. Verify that the application is properly licensed for institutional use.

Upgrading macOS

  1. Wait for the official ITS announcement (typically in February) before attempting a major version upgrade.
  2. Open the JAMF Self Service application on your Mac.
  3. Locate the approved macOS upgrade and follow the on-screen prompts.
  4. For smaller security patches, apply them when prompted by the system Software Update notifications.

Updating Windows

  1. When you see a system prompt for updates, click the notification to view available patches.
  2. Select Install Updates and Restart to ensure the process completes fully.
  3. To avoid productivity loss, ITS recommends performing these updates at the end of your workday.

Important Notes

  • Patience is Key: Major macOS upgrades are held for review until February to ensure all campus-critical software is compatible.
  • Compliance: All software must be properly licensed; please refer to the Technology Hardware Acquisition, Disposition and Replacement Policy for details.
  • Stay Current: Security updates should be applied as soon as they are prompted to protect College data.
