Body
Overview
When accessing the F&M system, you may be prompted to confirm your identity on your mobile device. This is called multi-factor authentication (MFA) and is used to (1) add more security and (2) make sure you’re the only one who can access your account – even if someone else knows your password. F&M uses Duo Multi-Factor Security to safeguard against any unauthorized access to important data.
You may be prompted to verify your access to applications typically found in F&M Experience, such as The Ampersand, course selection, timesheets, Degreeworks, student records, registration and school surveys. You will not be asked to approve log-ins every time, so always be prepared in case you are prompted to do so.
When you log into one of the F&M apps that requires Duo multi-factor authentication, you will enter your username and password. Then use your device to verify it's you. With this verification, you can access the application.

While there are various ways to confirm your identity, we strongly recommend downloading the Duo Mobile app on your phone to make the process easier and more secure as described in this knowledge article. If you don't have a phone to help with this verification process, please come to the Help Desk in Martin Sciences Library.
Before you get started
Note: When you get started with setting up Duo mobile, you will receive a text message with a 7-digit verification code; this code will be sent to the number you provided to the College as cell/mobile. If you need to change the number, log into F&M Experience (using the 7-digit code sent to the number you previously provided) and click My Info > Personal Information: Update personal information > Phone Number: Cell/Mobile.
- Sometimes incoming First Year Students enter their parent/guardian's cell phone number as the cell/mobile number on file, so the 7-digit verification code is sent to their phone. You will need to retrieve the passcode from that phone to access the system. Then go to F&M Experience to change the number to the right number (the student's number).
- If you are not getting the 7-digit code, then please contact ITS at 717-358-6789.
How To
Install the App
You will need your computer and mobile phone to set up Duo Mobile. (You can alternatively set up authentication via other methods, as mentioned in Step 6. But mobile phone is strongly recommended.)
Step One: Log in on your COMPUTER
1. When you log into an F&M app and are prompted to send a passcode, click Other Options.

Don't see the Text Passcode window?
If you don't see the Text Passcode window, then it means you recently logged into the system. You can force this window by going into Incognito mode in your web browser. To do so, follow these steps:
- In Chrome, click the "vertical three dots" in the upper right area of the screen.

- Click New incognito window.
- In your browser, go to id.fandm.edu
- Enter your NetID and F&M Password.
- Click Other options.
2. Click Manage Devices.
3. If prompted to verify your identity, click Text passcode. Then retrieve your passcode from your text messages and enter it into the Passcode field on your computer. Click Verify.
5. Click Add a device.

6. Select Duo Mobile.
Note: If you do not have a phone to use for this process, choose an option from this list to receive your passcode. Then follow the steps through the prompts on your screen to complete the registration process.
- Duo Mobile: To receive the code on a tablet via text message (Continue with Step Two instructions in this Knowledge Article to add the app to your tablet.)
- Phone number: To receive a phone call (landline) with the code
7. Enter your phone number.
8. Click Continue and confirm you correctly entered your phone number.
9. Click Next on your computer.
10. Keep this QR code window open on your computer, and you are ready to set up the Duo Mobile App on your mobile device.
Step Two: Set Up Duo Mobile on your PHONE
1. Find "Duo Mobile" in your app store and install it.

2. Open the app on your phone.
3. Follow the instructions in the app to add your account and allow access to your camera. When prompted to scan the QR code:
- Tap the + button or Scan QR code displayed in the Duo App on your phone.
- Using the Duo Mobile app on your phone, scan the barcode displayed on your computer screen.
- It should autofill a section for F&M, tap save/continue.
- The Continue button will become enabled on your computer screen; click it.
- When Duo asks to enable notifications, tap to accept.
- If prompted to share analytics or data, we recommend you tap no.
Installation complete!
Routine Sign-Ins
When you log into one of the F&M applications that require two factor authentication, you will enter your username and password. Then use your device to verify it’s you by approving the push notifications sent to your phone.
1. Click to access an F&M application. Enter your NetID and F&M password.
2. A push from Duo is sent to your phone. Tap Approve.
3. You are now securely logged in.
IMPORTANT Note: Make sure you Allow Notifications for the Duo App in your phone's system settings.
Remember for Future Log-Ins
While the system will not prompt you to approve log-ins every time, you can set the system to delay a future prompt by indicating when you are using your own personal device. (But do NOT set this when you are using a shared device in a lab or publicly-accessed computers.)
1. If logging in on your own personal computer: Click Yes this is my device.
2. If logging in on a shared computer -- like in a lab or shared space -- click No, other people use this device.
