Install Software on a College-Owned Apple Computer

Summary

How to install software on your Apple computer.

Body

Overview

If the College owns licensing for a software you want, but it is not already loaded on your College-owned Apple computer, you can install the software program yourself without the help of a technician. This is through an application called Self Service, which is loaded on your computer.

If you purchase software, you can install it on your computer yourself -- also without the help of a technician. You can use the Privileges app to gain administrator access on your College-owned Mac and then install the application.

How To

Install software the College owns

1. Click the Self Service icon in the Dock to launch the application (or locate the application in the Applications folder and click to open it).

2. In the Search field in the upper left corner, enter the name of the software program you are looking for.

  • This will retrieve a list of available software programs licensed by the College.
  • If you are uncertain of the name of the software you are looking for: Instead of using the Search field, click All at the left side of the screen and browse through the list.
  • Software in Self Service is customized for each computer.

3. Select the program you want to install.

4. Click Install or Run Now.  Wait as the computer installs the software.

5. To close Self Service, quit the program (Command-Q).

Install software you purchased

1. Open the Privileges application.

2. Click Request privileges.

3. As prompted, enter your NetID and F&M password.

4. You now have administrator privileges to install your software.  Install software, as you normally would.

5. Click Remove privileges when you are done.
