Overview
Apple provides regular software updates and major upgrades to maintain the security, stability, and feature set of macOS. This article explains the difference between these two types of installations and provides instructions on how to keep your F&M-owned computer up to date.
Before you get started
- This guide is intended for users of F&M-owned Apple computers.
- Major upgrades are typically deferred by ITS for 3-4 months post-release to ensure compatibility with campus systems.
- Ensure your computer is connected to a power source and do not close the lid during the installation process.
How to
Follow these steps to identify and install the appropriate software for your Mac.
Checking for Updates and Upgrades
- Click the Apple Menu (🍎) in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
- Navigate to General in the sidebar.
- Click on Software Update.
- The system will automatically check for available software.
Note: If no options appear, try to Quit System Settings and reopen it. If it still shows as up to date, your device likely cannot support a newer version.

Installing Incremental Updates
Incremental updates (e.g., moving from version 15.1 to 15.2) provide security patches and bug fixes. These usually occur monthly.
- In the Software Update pane, look for the Also Available section.
- Click the Info icon (small "i") to see details about the available updates.
- Click Update Now.
Note: Incremental updates do not require administrator credentials and typically take less time than major upgrades.
Performing a Major macOS Upgrade
Upgrades (e.g., moving from macOS Sequoia to macOS Tahoe) introduce new features and occur annually.
- In the Software Update pane, click Upgrade Now.
- If prompted for an administrator's username and password, open the Privileges application from your Applications folder or Dock.
- Click Enable Privileges to elevate your account status.
- Return to the update window and enter your NetID and Password to begin the installation.

Important Notes
- Patience is Key: Your machine may restart multiple times during an upgrade. Do not force restart or close the lid.
- Admin Rights: Use the Privileges app if the system asks for an administrator login during a major upgrade.
- Release Lag: Remember that new macOS versions released by Apple in the fall are usually not available at F&M until the following February.
- Power: Always stay connected to a charger; a loss of power during an OS installation can cause system failure.
