Connect Personal/Smart Devices to the Network

Overview

You can wirelessly connect your personal/smart devices -- such as gaming consoles, smart TVs, smart pods, and streaming media devices (i.e. Chromecast, Fire Stick, and Roku) -- to the F&M wireless network. The fandm-iot network is specifically set up to handle devices like these.

Before You Begin

You will need to locate the WIRELESS MAC ADDRESS of the personal device you want to connect. You can usually find the MAC address in the device's network settings, or it is sometimes printed on the physical device. If you have a hard time finding it, refer to the manufacturer's website for information on how to locate your device's MAC address.  Or search Google for "<device name> find MAC address."

How To

Set up your device on the fandm-iot wireless network

Make sure you are connecting the right devices to the right network.  Fandm-iot is for the "internet of things" and is set up to handle your Roku, Firestick, Playstation, Xbox, etc.

1. On a laptop or phone, browse to https://connect.fandm.edu.

2. Log in using your NetID@fandm.edu along with your F&M password. This opens a window that will allow you to add a device that has never been connected to the F&M network.

3. Click Create Device.

4. Enter a Device Name in the appropriate field. Use something descriptive such as Playstation, Fire Stick, XBox, etc.

5. Enter the device's wireless MAC address.  Click Create Device.

6. The Updated Device Details window displays and shows the Wi-Fi password you will need to use when connecting your device to the network.

7. Go to your personal device's Wi-Fi Network settings to see the list of available wireless networks.

8. Choose fandm-iot.

9. When prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password from the Updated Device Details window, and your device will connect to fandm-iot.

Move a device from the FandM-Guest network to fandm-iot

If you previously connected your personal device to another F&M wireless network (like FandM-Guest) then you will need to generate a new password and connect that device to the fandm-iot network.

1. On a laptop or phone, browse to https://connect.fandm.edu

2. Log in using your NetID@fandm.edu and your F&M password.

3. Click Manage Devices.

4. Check the MAC address of your device with those listed in this window:

  • If your device is not listed here, then follow the instructions earlier in this document titled "Setting Up a New Device on the Wireless Network."
  • If your device is listed, continue to step 5.

Set up devices to communicate with each other on F&M networks

When to enable AirGroup: Check the Enable AirGroup box in the Register Device window IF you have multiple devices that need to "talk to each other" on the F&M Eduroam network and/or the fandm-iot network. When you check this box, you will need to enter your NetID@fandm.edu in the Shared With field.

Connect your personal device via ethernet

If you have a personal/smart device you want to connect to the network via an ethernet cable, the process is very similar to connecting to the wireless network. Before you begin, you will need to locate the WIRED MAC address (also called the physical address).

NOTE: For more help finding your device's wired MAC address, search Google for "<device name> find wired MAC address."

To connect via your ethernet cable, follow the same steps as you would to set up a new wireless device on the wireless network, but instead use your WIRED MAC address and make sure your ethernet port is active. After you click Create Device, you will successfully be connected to the network. You WILL NOT NEED to enter the password you generate.

Troubleshooting

If trying to connect via ethernet port, make sure your port is active

When connecting to an ethernet port, make sure you are using the wired MAC address. If you are sure you are following these steps correctly, then make sure your port is activated. To activate a port, enter a Service Request.

It is important to have the right MAC address of your device.

Almost every device has a wired and a wireless MAC address -- make sure you are using the right one.  Check your device's Settings, the box your device came in, or the manfacturer's website for the appropriate MAC address. If you are still having trouble you can search Google with "<device name> find MAC address" for more ways to locate your device's MAC address.

This network is only for personal devices.

The fandm-iot network is intended for personal/smart devices such as smart TVs, smart pods, Chrome cast, gaming consoles, etc.

If you previously had your device connected to another fandm network, you will need to follow these directions.

If you were previously using your device on the F&M Guest network, then refer to the section that tells you how to move it from that network to the fandm-iot network.

FAQs

Do I need to put my phone and laptop on the fandm-iot network?

No. Your phone and laptop should be connected to the Eduroam network. The fandm-iot network is set up specifically for gaming consoles, smart TVs, smart speakers, etc. Note that devices can communicate with each other on F&M Networks.

What is the iot network?

This network is a WPA2 mPSK network, which means that each device will get its own, unique, network password. You need to follow the instructions in this document to get the unique password for your device. The name “iot” is short for internet of things.
