F&M ID and Access Cards FAQs

Overview

Every student, faculty, and professional staff member is issued an ID card that should be kept with them at all times. The card has a microchip with important personal information and campus building access, so it should be kept safe. If your ID is lost, stolen, or damaged, please alert Card Services immediately so your card can be de-activated. Additionally, information on your ID card is updated frequently, so you should visit an update point card reader every five days to ensure you have the access you need.

FAQs

Where is the Card Services Desk?
The Card Services Desk is located on the first floor of the Martin Library of the Sciences, in the Technology Lending Center.

What is the best way to contact the Card Services Desk?
The Card Services Desk operates under the same hours as the ITS Help Desk and the Technology Lending Center. Walk-ins are welcome during our open hours, but we highly encourage anyone who has an issue to submit a Service Request and describe your question or concern. You can also reach us by phone during our open hours at 717-358-6789.

Hours of operation:

Monday - Thursday:  8:00AM to 10:00PM

Saturday and Sunday:  11:00AM to 9:00PM

What do I do if my ID is lost/stolen or damaged?
Please stop by the Card Services Desk during our open hours upon recognizing your ID is lost, stolen, or damaged. If you cannot do that immediately, submit a Service Request at any time to notify us that your ID has been lost or stolen so we can deactivate it.

  • Please Note: a fifteen dollar ($15) charge will be assessed for replacement cards that are lost or stolen, or that have been damaged beyond what we determine to be reasonable 'wear and tear.'

What should I do if I cannot access a building or room that I think I SHOULD have access to?
It is likely that you need to update your card. Please visit an Update Point Card Reader Locations table to update your card.

Why do I need to update my card?
Information about your access credentials is stored on your card itself. By using one of the Update Point Card Readers on campus, the system will update which doors you have access to and when, or provide other changes related to when doors are programmed to be accessible. When you update your card, it also provides critical information back to the system that is necessary for maintenance and auditing purposes.

How often do I need to update my card?
You should update your card at least once every five days. There are about a dozen Update Point Card Readers on campus. Most members of the community will enter a building through a door with this type of card reader far more often then the five day minimum. Those that have been away from campus for an extended period of time, or who infrequently enter buildings with Update Point Card Readers, should visit an Update Point Card Reader upon returning to campus.

What will happen if I do not use an Update Point Card Reader often enough?
If your card is not updated often enough, critical access information will not be passed to your card in a timely manner. This may prevent you from being granted access to certain doors that you otherwise would have access to. Failing to update your card on a regular basis may also prevent important information from being passed back to the access control system which can make it more difficult to identify and fix issues that could affect your (and others) ability to access certain buildings and spaces.

Where are the Update Point Card Readers located?
You can update your card at the following stand alone update point station locations:

If updating your card does not resolve the issue, please create a Service Request in the Support Portal.

What should I do if I'd like to request access to a building or space that I DO NOT already have access to?
Faculty and Professional Staff should submit a Service Request to ITS. Students CANNOT request access for themselves -- requests will need to be approved in advance and made by the Office/Department that controls a building/space. In addition to the Office/Department that controls a building/space, any request for access outside of the building hours stated above will need to be approved by a member of senior staff.

What should I do if I cannot use my ID to access other F&M services, like meal credit or library services?
Please submit an ITS Service Request.
