Intro to NotebookLM

Overview

NotebookLM is a Google-based Large Language Model (LLM) designed to act as a sophisticated learning resource. Unlike general AI, it functions as a "Closed Source AI," meaning it interacts only with the specific trusted information you provide, ensuring answers are grounded in your data with inline citations for fact-checking. This article is designed for F&M staff looking to transform dense documents into neatly packaged, consumable formats like FAQs, study guides, or audio overviews.

Before you get started

  • NotebookLM is a Google product; ensure you are logged into your F&M Google Workspace account.

  • F&M Google Suite does not train on our data, but users should still adhere to the College's Data Classification Policy.

  • Prepare your source materials, which can include PDFs, Google Docs, website URLs, YouTube transcriptions, or even images of text and audio/video files.

How to

Follow these steps to set up your research notebook and utilize the built-in AI capabilities.

Interacting with the Chat

  1. Navigate to the chat interface at the bottom of your notebook.

  2. Enter a specific query into the Type a message field to ask questions based on your sources.

  3. For example, you can ask, "What were the three main budget concerns mentioned in the October meeting?" or "Does the auditorium have a booking in December?".

  4. Review the response and click on the inline citations to verify the facts directly against your uploaded source materials.

Using the Notebook Guide for Study

To instantly generate organized content, type one of the formatting options:

  • FAQ: Creates a list of frequently asked questions based on your data.
  • Table of Contents: Generates a structured overview of your documents.
  • Study Guide: Produces a summary and key points for learning.
  • Timeline: Formats chronological data into a clear sequence.

Generating Audio Overviews

  1. Open the Notebook Guide.

  2. Locate the Audio Overview section, often referred to as the "Instant Podcast".

  3. Click the Audio Overview button or click the pencil to customize.

  4. The AI will create a conversational deep dive where two hosts discuss the themes of your source materials.

Note: This is an excellent way to consume long documents or complex research while on the go.
