Overview
Google Meet is an online video conferencing tool you can use for meetings, online classrooms, and remote collaboration. You can use it to connect through video, audio, chat, and screen sharing. Google Meet is different from Zoom because it runs in your browser, rather than in an application window, so you need to keep your browser open to remain in the meeting.
How To
Google Meet has a lot of flexibility. You can start a meeting on the fly or schedule a specific meeting time and invite the people you want to join in. You can toggle video, audio, and screen sharing ON and OFF. You can also access Google Meet through a web browser on your phone.
Note: You can set up or start a new Google Meet video meeting from Meet, Gmail, Calendar, Chat (on mobile), and other scheduling system.
Start a meeting on the fly
Begin a new meeting
1. Open Google Meet from the Google waffle menu.
2. Click New meeting.
3. Click Start an instant meeting.
4. To add more people to your meeting, click Add others:
- To add other F&M colleagues, type their name and choose from the list.
- To add colleagues outside of F&M, type their email to send them a link to the meeting via email.
- To add anyone via phone, enter their phone number. They will join the meeting by audio only.
- You can copy a link and paste it into email, chat, calendar invitations. Click Share full details. This copies to your clipboard, and you can paste it into a message. This provides the recipient with a link that will directly take them into your meeting.

Add Google Meet so someone can join virtually (after the meeting starts)
Sometimes you join a meeting that was intended to be in-person, and then after the meeting starts, you realize you need to add someone virtually. If you are not the meeting owner, you can get everyone in the same meeting by creating Google Meet on the fly as described above and then copy the link and paste in chat so that everyone invited to the meeting has a link.
1. Open Google Meet from the Google waffle menu.
2. Click New meeting.
3. Click Start an instant meeting.
4. Click Share full details. This copies the meeting information to your clipboard.
5. Open the meeting invite on your calendar.
6. Click Chat with guests. (Or you can choose the option to send via email.)

7. In the chat field, paste from your clipboard and send. This sends a Google Meet link to everyone invited to the meeting, so they can join.
