Helpful Technology Tips for New Students

Overview

The following is important information included in the course (Class of 20XX) students complete as part of the summer on-line orientation in Canvas.

How To

Get Your NetID and F&M Password

After you sent in your enrollment fee, you received a welcome email from F&M with your NetID and the information you need to claim your F&M account. Your NetID identifies you on the network and, when used in combination with your password, allows you to access a variety of computer resources at F&M.

If you didn't already claim your account, please locate that email and follow the instructions. It directs you to set your account password, which will become your password for all campus services.

Note: When you set your new password, the system performs an automated check to see if it was involved in a breach/hack. If it was, then you will be prompted to select another password.

If you're having trouble, reach out to our Information Technology Service team by calling 717-358-6789 or opening a ticket here, and make sure you include your personal email address and/or phone number so we can get in touch with you.

Install Google at F&M

F&M uses the Google Application Suite for general file storage, productivity tools, and you have a student Gmail account to use for all of your college communications. Chrome is Google's browser, and the one we recommend for all of your F&M-related work. If you don't have it installed on your computer, you can do that here on Google's website.

Access Your Phone Number a Student ID Number

My Diplomat

Your welcome email prompted you to access MyDiplomat at http://mydiplomat.fandm.edu. if you didn't do that already, you can go there now. When you access this site, enter your NetID and password as prompted. The first time you log into MyDiplomat, you are prompted to check your phone for a 7-digit passcode to verify your identity.

Note: The passcode will be sent to the personal mobile phone number you provided to F&M as part of the enrollment process.

Enter the passcode on your phone, and you will be directed to MyDiplomat. Take some time to get familiar with MyDiplomat -- the College's information portal. There are important resources, such as The Ampersand community platform, and you can also access your personal student data here.

Your Phone Number

If your passcode went to the wrong phone number, or you have a new number, you can change it in MyDiplomat. You should only include ONE cell/mobile phone number. The mobile number you have on file will be used for any campus alerts and two factor authentication.

To edit your phone number on file:

1. Log into http://mydiplomat.fandm.edu/.

2. Click Navigation in the menubar at the top of the screen.

3. Click My Info.

4. Click Manage Personal Information (icon in center of screen).

5. Enter your NetID and F&M password, if prompted.

6. Scroll to Phone Number.

7. Click the pencil icon to edit the Cell/Mobile number listed.

8. Enter the first three digits in the Area Code field, and the remaining digits in the Phone Number field. For international phones, enter your phone number in a 3-digit, followed by 7-digit form, starting with the International Access Code followed by the Phone number.

9. Click Add.

Note: Only include ONE cell/mobile phone number. If you need to have more numbers on file, you can add them in MyDiplomat and choose Phone Type as either Temporary or Permanent.

Your Student ID number

1. Log into http://mydiplomat.fandm.edu/, if you haven't already.

2. Click Navigation in the menubar at the top of the screen.

3. Click My Info.

4. Click Manage Personal Information (icon in the center of the screen).

5. You will find your ID number, a nine-digit number beginning in 900, on the left-hand side of the screen beneath your name.

Note: When you arrive on campus and receive your F&M ID card, your ID number will be on the card.

MyDiplomat on Your Phone

You can download and use the myF&M app on yoru phone to access MyDiplomat. Visit your app store and search for myF&M. Use your F&M NetID and password to access the information in the app.

Set Up Duo

We have two types of security to protect your personal data. We use Duo Multi-Factor Security to verify your access to applications typically accessed through MyDiplomat.

You will need to set up the Duo Mobile app on your phone to access the prompts for Duo security. To complete this process, you need a computer AND the mobile phone you want to install the application on. It only takes five minutes and is very important, so please take the time to access and follow the full installation instructions here

Note: You most likely will not see the Text Passcode window when you log it (as referenced in the instructions), so you will need to follow the instructions that guide you to open a New Incognito Window.

Set Up Google 2-Step Verification

The second type of security we use is Google 2-Step Verification which validates your identity when you access Google apps using your F&M account, such as your F&M Gmail. The first time you use a Google app connected to your F&M account, you will be prompted to select a method to confirm your identity and initiate Google 2-Step Verification. You must complete this process, as detailed in the welcome email, within 90 days. If more time passes, then reach out to ITS for assistance. This step is very important, so please take the time to complete it.

Access the full installation instructions here.

Re-Set Your Password

You need your NetID and password to access multiple applications across the F&M network. If something happens to your password, you have the ability to re-set/change your password. This includes if you forget your password, or if it otherwise becomes compromised and you need to choose a new one.

You can access the instructions here.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to change your password through the https://id.fandm.edu/ website, and then click Forgot your NetID, as described in the instructions linked above. DO NOT change your password through Google. When you change your password at id.fandm.edu, it will sync to your Google log-ins.  BUT, if you change your password in Google, it will not sync anywhere else.

Connect to Campus Wi-Fi Network

When on campus, you can connect your wireless device to the Eduroam Wi-Fi network using your F&M credentials and running a downloadable application (called Geteduroam). Access the instructions here to connect to Eduroam.

Important Note: While you do have the ability to connect to Eduroam without following these linked instructions, we do not recommend it. Running the Geteduroam app safeguards against any malicious security threats that could compromise your data, and you will also be assured you have the most robust version of Eduroam.

The Eduroam network is available at thousands of academic and public institutions. After you set up Eduroam on your device, you will be able to use your F&M credentials to connect to Eduroam networks at other institutions.

There are two other wireless networks on campus with very specific uses.

  • FandM-Guest Network: Temporary connection for guests.
  • Fandm-iot:  For gaming consoles, smart TVs, smart pods, and streaming media. To set up your devices when on campus, access the instructions here.

Set Up Email on Your Phone

You can access your Gmail on a mobile device many ways, and we recommend using the Gmail app. Before you try to access from your phone, make sure you claim your NetID, set up Google 2-Step, and log into your Gmail account on a web browser before accessing on your phone. Then proceed with adding the Gmail app on your mobile device.

To install Gmail on your mobile device:

1. Download the Gmail app from your app store.

2. Install and open the app.

3. Select the option to add a new mail account.

4. Enter your NetID followed by @fandm.edu (ex: brankli@fandm.edu). This is your F&M email address.

  • As prompted, enter your F&M password, Google 2-Step Verification, and/or PIN.
  • If prompted, enter your NetID (ex: bfrankli) and your F&M password.

5. Click Save.

If you already have the Gmail app and are using it for another account, you can add your F&M account.

1. Open the Gmail app.

2. Click your Google account personal image or initial in the top right of the screen.

3. Click Add another account.

4. Click Google.

5. Follow the prompts and use your new F&M Google email address and password to sign in.

  • Note: You can now toggle between your Google Gmail accounts using the personal image or initial in the top right of the screen and select the account you want to view.

You can access the full instructions here.
